Food has a power like no other.
It nourishes and sustains; provides comfort at our nadir and pleasure at our zenith. Ever present regardless of culture or creed, what we eat can punctuate — sometimes define — life’s many moments: the romances and travels, holidays and festivals, birthdays and weddings, yes, even the funerals.
The truth is, food brings people together in a manner that is visceral and lasting. We have always shared our meals… around a fire, around a table, these days, on a chat group and on the socials. Breaking bread goes far beyond just passing time. It is a cornerstone of community.
While digital memory bytes are binary and exacting, human memory notoriously isn’t. What we remember is often farraginous, a mishmash of senses and emotions tied to time and place, unwittingly or perhaps conveniently reconstructed. This site does not discriminate. All personal truths shared in good faith are preserved and presented thus.
A Bite of Memory celebrates them all — the delicious, the disquieting, the downright sketchy. Stories that have stayed with us for whatever the reason. Little bites in 200 words or under. Each taking their cue from a simple question:
What is your most powerful food memory?
