Strawberry Pie
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
F Street was the shopping area in downtown Washington, DC. Before malls, before the suburbs, there was Woodies, Garfinckel’s, Hecht Company… all the really nice jewelry shops and shoe shops. My grandmother worked in the jewelry store my grandfather owned, Kahn-Oppenheimer. She always looked great, always dressed up. She wore high heels. Even when she was really old in a nursing home, she still had her hair done. She was fancy. But she was a horrible cook. I mean, it was a nightmare, she boiled everything. When my sister and I would spend the night with her, this was 1961, maybe 1962, she took us out to lunch at Reeves on F Street. It was just a breakfast and lunch place, very simple food but amazingly good. Chicken sandwich: fresh chicken on toasted white bread with mayonnaise. But the most memorable thing was the strawberry pie. Fresh pie crust with these big, luscious strawberries and then a glaze on top. Fabulous! No custard, no whipped cream, no extra stuff, just the whole strawberries. There were probably three layers of strawberries, and they give you a big slice. It was so simple, but it was pretty genius back then.
