Yoo-hoo
North Venice, Florida
I went to military school, and every Sunday, buses would come to take all the people to their different churches. For us Jewish students, we managed to share just one cab. So, when it came time for college, my mother wanted me to have more exposure to people of our same religion. That’s how I ended up at American University. My freshman year was in 1972. One of my roommates was Ron Zolotov. His father was the president of Yoo-hoo — it’s a chocolate drink, flavored chocolate water — and he would send us cases and cases of the stuff. There used to be another drink called Brownie Chocolate you could compare it to. But they don’t make that anymore. Now there is Nesquik. I came to find Yoo-hoo because the price was right. And I drink it to this day… always cold. It’s nothing really, just above water and lots of sugar. You certainly won’t find many Yoo-hoo aficionados, but I drink it when I’m really, really thirsty. It’s refreshing. I also like the orange drink Hi-C. I get my vitamin C from that. When it comes to the appetite of a 12-year-old, I just never overcame mine.
